o back many moons ago, Arsenio Hall had a talk show-and yes little young' uns, I know he has one now. But his original late night talk show was on when I was in college. One of his ongoing jokes/segments was when strange or absurd things happened, he would talk about them, scratch his head with his mile long finger and say, "things that make you go hmm..." So when I heard the story that the NFL will not let the company that sells "Slap ya Mama" hot sauce advertise in the Super Bowl because it may encourage domestic violence, I had to scratch my head. I have lived in south Louisiana for a sum total of 19 years and so I am accustomed to the local phrase. But for my friends who aren't familiar-it is a phrase most often used in reference to food. "That jambalaya was sooo good, it'll make ya slap ya mama!" Of course, I can think of zero mamas (be they from Louisiana or any other place) who would let one of their offspring actually slap them and live to tell the tale. The phrase means the food is some kind of good-so good that risking life or limb would be understood to express how delicious the food is. But quite frankly, I don't believe any thinking person actually needs that definition to understand the jest of the hot sauce's title-regardless of their familiarity with Louisiana vernacular. It's not meant to be taken literally. If hot sauce labels were to be taken literally, the company that sells the variations of "butts on fire" (they might use more "colorful" language- hee hee) would have gone out of business long ago. C'mon NFL, it's a joke title. The fact that you are over thinking this issue, well, *scratching head* makes me go hmmmm......
